What is a load board?
Load boards (also called freight boards) are matching systems. Brokers and shippers post a load with origin, destination, equipment, weight, and a rate or a request for a bid. Carriers search those posts, or post an empty truck so a broker can call them. Melton’s 2025 roundup describes the same loop: post a load, post empty equipment, or bid. FMCSA does not license “load boards.” It registers motor carriers and brokers. The board is a search tool sitting on top of those relationships.
How a load board works
You log into a website or app, set origin, equipment, and a pickup window, then scan the results. Convoy’s explainer lists four carrier moves: search posted loads, post empty equipment, bid where the board allows it, and filter for freight types such as power-only. Brokers use the other side of the same board to cover freight their contracted trucks cannot take. Instant book, call-to-book, and bid-only posts behave differently; the rate confirmation is still the document that matters once someone says yes.
Paid boards and free boards
Google’s first page for this query on August 27, 2026 was mostly product pages: DAT, Truckstop, Trucker Path, 123Loadboard, TruckSmarter, C.H. Robinson’s Navisphere board, and J.B. Hunt. Several of those pitch free search. Paid boards usually sell extra search tools, credit or broker context, rate data, and mobile features around the listings. Free access can still be a broker’s private board, a carrier app with a limited view, or a marketplace that makes money another way. The price tag does not tell you whether the freight in your lanes is bookable.
What load boards cost
Most full-featured boards sell a monthly or annual subscription. Tiers, included users, and add-ons change. Convoy, citing a Comcap Factoring article, said some subscriptions reach $100 a month. That is one secondary estimate, not a current invoice. Check the provider’s live plan page for the tier you are considering, including cancellation. Do not treat a 2025 blog range as the price you will be billed.
Are load boards worth it?
A board is worth the fee if it produces qualified, bookable freight you would not have found as cheaply another way, after deadhead and the time spent searching. A large listing count can be duplicates, stale posts, and rates that fail once you add empty miles. New authority often needs a public board because there is no private freight yet. An established lease-on truck may already get work from the carrier’s board. Worth is a lane result, not a brand reputation score.
How to use a load board
Search the lanes you actually run, at the times you actually search. Convert every offer into an all-in rate that includes deadhead, then compare it with current cost per mile. Call or message only after the miles and window fit. Check the broker before dispatch. Save the rate confirmation. What to compare before you subscribe
Count qualified loads in your equipment and pickup window, not total posts. Time the path from search to a saved confirmation. Read how the board shows broker or credit context. Check mobile use if you search from the truck. Add the full subscription, extra users, and add-ons. Confirm cancellation.
