The Fuel Cost per Mile Formula
To find your exact fuel cost per mile: Divide total trip fuel expense by total trip miles. Formula: Fuel CPM = Total Trip Fuel Spend ÷ (Loaded Miles + Deadhead Miles). For example, spending $650 on diesel across 1,000 total miles results in a fuel CPM of $0.650. Knowing this number allows you to immediately see whether a broker’s rate confirmation covers variable operating costs.

Over 100,000 annual highway miles, a truck averaging 6.0 MPG burns 16,667 gallons of diesel. A truck averaging 7.2 MPG burns 13,889 gallons. Speed governance (62–65 MPH vs 70+ MPH), tire inflation, aerodynamic trailer skirts, and minimizing idle time represent the highest-ROI adjustments an owner-operator can make.
Retail Pump Price vs. Net Delivered Cost: Card Discounts and Fees
Advertised fuel card discounts can deceive operators. A card offering a 40-cent discount at a truck stop charging $4.50/gallon results in a $4.10 net price. Buying fuel at an independent stop with a posted price of $3.95/gallon costs less, even with zero card discount. Furthermore, out-of-network transaction fees ($2.50 to $5.00) and detour miles must be factored into your delivered net fuel price.
IFTA Fuel Tax Implications: Why Cheaper Pump Prices Can Mislead
Under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), fuel taxes are owed based on where miles are driven, not where fuel is purchased. If you purchase fuel in a low-tax state and drive through high-tax states (like Pennsylvania, Indiana, or California), you will owe the tax difference at your quarterly IFTA filing. Always evaluate fuel stops based on the base price excluding state fuel taxes.

Plan fuel stops at partner network locations with verified discounts, accounting for state IFTA fuel tax differences.
4. Calculate Fuel Surcharge Offset
Compare your calculated fuel cost per mile against the broker’s fuel surcharge allowance to verify coverage.

How can an owner-operator improve truck MPG?
The most effective ways to increase MPG are: (1) Lowering cruising speed from 70 MPH to 63–65 MPH (each 1 MPH reduction improves fuel efficiency by roughly 0.1 MPG); (2) Maintaining correct tire inflation pressures; (3) Adding trailer side skirts and wheel covers; and (4) Installing an APU to eliminate overnight engine idling.
How are fuel surcharges calculated on freight loads?
In dedicated contract freight, fuel surcharges (FSC) are typically pegged to a baseline (e.g., $1.25 or $1.50/gal) using a standard formula: (Current EIA Diesel Average − Base Peg) ÷ 6.0 MPG = FSC per mile. In the spot market, brokers quote flat all-in rates that bundle fuel surcharge into linehaul.
